Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Omega-3 fatty acids have some scientific support for use in eye health, particularly for conditions linked to dry eye syndrome, which can cause bloodshot or red eyes. Several clinical studies have investigated the role of omega-3 supplementation (such as fish oil or flaxseed oil) in improving symptoms of dry eye, which often include redness, irritation, and a bloodshot appearance. Omega-3s are thought to exert anti-inflammatory effects and help stabilize the tear film, reducing ocular surface inflammation and promoting healthier, clearer eyes.

A number of randomized controlled trials have shown modest improvements in dry eye symptoms and tear quality after omega-3 supplementation. For example, the DREAM study (2018) found no significant difference between omega-3 and placebo for dry eye relief, but other, smaller studies have demonstrated reduced tear osmolarity and ocular surface inflammation. The American Academy of Ophthalmology acknowledges that omega-3s may be beneficial for some patients but notes that evidence is mixed and recommendations are not definitive.

It’s important to note that omega-3 fatty acids are not a primary treatment for acute bloodshot eyes caused by infections, allergies, or trauma. Their main role is as an adjunct for chronic conditions like dry eye, which can present with redness. Therefore, while there is some scientific rationale for their use in specific cases, the overall strength of evidence is moderate at best.
