Evidence supporting the use of: Momordica
For the health condition: Blood Poisoning
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Momordica, a genus that includes species such as Momordica charantia (bitter melon) and Momordica foetida, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems across Asia and Africa. In some cultures, preparations of Momordica species have been used to address conditions broadly described as "blood poisoning"—a term that may refer to sepsis, systemic infections, or toxin-related illnesses. Traditional usage typically involves decoctions, infusions, or extracts of the fruit, seeds, or leaves, believed to have "blood-purifying" properties.
However, there is little direct scientific evidence supporting the use of Momordica for treating sepsis or blood poisoning as understood in modern medicine. While some laboratory studies have shown anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties in extracts from Momordica species, these findings are preliminary and do not specifically validate efficacy against systemic infections or sepsis in humans. No clinical trials have assessed its use for blood poisoning. Therefore, the support for this application is primarily traditional, with a low level of evidence based mostly on historical or ethnobotanical reports rather than rigorous scientific validation.
