Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Hemp Agrimony (Eupatorium cannabinum) has a long history of use in traditional European herbal medicine. Historically, it was used as a blood purifier and was sometimes recommended for conditions thought to involve 'bad blood,' which in older terminology could include what was then described as 'blood poisoning' (now generally referred to as sepsis or systemic infection). Folk medicine applications included use as a diaphoretic and mild laxative to 'cleanse the system.' However, there is little to no scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of hemp agrimony in treating or supporting recovery from actual blood poisoning (sepsis). Modern clinical studies are lacking, and phytochemical analyses have not demonstrated any strong antimicrobial or systemic anti-inflammatory activities that would be relevant to blood poisoning. Thus, while its use is documented in historical texts and some traditional herbal guides, this is not supported by scientific validation. Caution is advised, as some constituents of the plant can be hepatotoxic. In summary, hemp agrimony’s connection to 'blood poisoning' is rooted in traditional concepts of cleansing and blood purification rather than modern medical or scientific evidence.
