Evidence supporting the use of: Hedyotis
For the health condition: Blood Poisoning
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Hedyotis (commonly known as Oldenlandia or Hedyotis diffusa) has been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to support the treatment of “blood poisoning,” a term that historically refers to systemic infections or sepsis. In TCM, Hedyotis is believed to “clear heat and detoxify,” which aligns with its use for infections, abscesses, and inflammatory conditions. While a few laboratory and animal studies suggest that extracts of Hedyotis diffusa possess antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects, there is a lack of robust clinical data specifically supporting its efficacy for sepsis or blood poisoning in humans. The available scientific evidence is limited to in vitro or in vivo models, and no high-quality randomized controlled trials have validated its use for this indication. The rating reflects that, while there is a strong tradition of use and some preliminary scientific rationale, there is insufficient clinical evidence to confirm its effectiveness for treating blood poisoning in modern medical terms. Therefore, its use is primarily justified by tradition and supported only by low-grade scientific evidence.
