Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Costus (Saussurea costus), also known as "kuth," is a medicinal plant traditionally employed in various systems of medicine, such as Ayurveda, Unani, and Traditional Chinese Medicine. In these traditions, it has been used to treat a range of ailments, including respiratory conditions, digestive issues, and infections. Its use for “blood poisoning” (often equated with sepsis in modern terms) is mainly rooted in traditional medicine practices, where it is believed to possess detoxifying and antimicrobial properties. However, rigorous scientific data directly supporting its effectiveness for blood poisoning are lacking. Limited in vitro and animal studies have shown that extracts of Costus may have some antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities. These findings provide a theoretical basis for its traditional use in infections, but there are no robust clinical studies or scientific consensus establishing its efficacy or safety for treating sepsis or blood poisoning in humans. Thus, while Costus is sometimes cited in traditional contexts for such uses, its clinical application for blood poisoning remains unvalidated by modern research, and its use should not replace evidence-based medical treatments for such serious conditions.
