Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Cluster Fig (Ficus racemosa), also known as Gular or Udumbara, is widely used in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani. In these traditions, different parts of the tree—including the bark, fruit, and latex—are used for their purported medicinal properties. One of the traditional uses includes the treatment of conditions interpreted as "blood poisoning," which may refer to sepsis, infections, or blood impurities in historical medical terminology. The plant is believed to have detoxifying, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties, which are thought to help purify the blood and counteract infections. However, the scientific evidence supporting the use of Cluster Fig specifically for blood poisoning (modern sepsis or septicemia) is minimal. A few in vitro and animal studies suggest that extracts of Ficus racemosa possess antibacterial and antioxidant activities, but these findings are preliminary. There are no clinical trials or substantial pharmacological studies demonstrating its efficacy in treating blood poisoning in humans. Therefore, while its use is supported by longstanding traditional practice, rigorous scientific validation is lacking. Further research is needed before it can be recommended for this serious condition based on modern evidence.
