Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Achyranthes, particularly Achyranthes aspera, has a longstanding history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Unani, and folk medicine across India and other parts of Asia. In these traditions, it is commonly employed for a variety of urinary disorders, including hematuria (blood in urine). The plant is believed to possess diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and astringent properties, which may be beneficial in treating urinary tract issues. Traditional healers often use Achyranthes in the form of decoctions, powders, or infusions to help clear blood from urine and alleviate related symptoms.
However, the scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of Achyranthes for treating blood in urine is limited. Most available information comes from ethnobotanical surveys and historical texts rather than controlled clinical studies. There are a few preclinical studies suggesting that Achyranthes extracts may have anti-inflammatory and diuretic effects, which could theoretically contribute to symptom relief in urinary tract conditions. Nonetheless, there is a lack of robust human clinical trials directly investigating its use for hematuria specifically. Thus, while the traditional use is well-documented, the evidence base from modern science remains insufficient for strong validation.
