Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) has attracted scientific interest for its potential cardiovascular benefits, including effects relevant to blood clot prevention (antithrombotic activity). Several in vitro and animal studies have indicated that Sea Buckthorn extracts—particularly those from the berries, seeds, and leaves—may exert mild antiplatelet and anticoagulant effects. These effects are believed to be due to bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, vitamin E, and omega-3/omega-7 fatty acids present in the plant, which may modulate platelet aggregation and blood viscosity.

For example, a 2016 study in rats found that Sea Buckthorn oil could inhibit platelet aggregation and prolong bleeding time, potentially reducing the risk of thrombosis. Some in vitro studies have also shown that Sea Buckthorn flavonoids can inhibit key pathways in clot formation. However, the quality and quantity of clinical data in humans are very limited. There are no large-scale randomized controlled trials directly evaluating Sea Buckthorn’s efficacy for the prevention or treatment of blood clots in humans.

In summary, while there is preclinical scientific evidence suggesting a possible effect of Sea Buckthorn on blood clot formation, clinical validation is lacking, and the overall strength of evidence is low (rating: 2/5). Sea Buckthorn should not be relied upon as a primary therapy for blood clot prevention without medical supervision.
