Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Perilla oil, derived from the seeds of Perilla frutescens, is rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an omega-3 fatty acid. There is some scientific evidence suggesting that omega-3 fatty acids, including those found in perilla oil, may have antithrombotic (blood clot-preventing) effects. Studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids can reduce platelet aggregation and decrease blood viscosity, which in turn may lower the risk of forming abnormal blood clots. Specifically, animal and in vitro studies have demonstrated that perilla oil supplementation can inhibit platelet aggregation and may improve blood flow. However, clinical trials in humans are limited and the evidence is not as robust or direct as that for fish oils (EPA and DHA). Most of the available data are extrapolated from studies on omega-3 fatty acids in general rather than perilla oil specifically. There are also a few small human studies and animal experiments indicating potential cardiovascular benefits, including effects on blood clotting parameters. Nonetheless, the quality and quantity of evidence are not strong enough to firmly recommend perilla oil as a treatment or preventive measure for blood clots. More rigorous, large-scale human studies are needed to confirm these effects. In summary, there is some scientific backing for the use of perilla oil in blood clot prevention, mostly based on its omega-3 content, but the direct evidence is limited and rated as low to moderate in strength.
