Rating (out of 5): 3

Panax notoginseng (also known as Sanqi or Tienchi ginseng) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) primarily for promoting blood circulation and stopping bleeding. In recent decades, its effects on blood clot prevention and cardiovascular health have become the subject of scientific research. Several in vitro and in vivo studies indicate that notoginseng saponins, the main active compounds, possess antithrombotic and anticoagulant properties. For example, notoginsenosides have been shown to inhibit platelet aggregation, reduce blood viscosity, and modulate coagulation pathways in animal models. Some clinical trials, though limited and often with small sample sizes, suggest potential benefits for patients with cardiovascular diseases by reducing risk factors associated with thrombosis.

However, while laboratory and preliminary clinical evidence is promising, there is not yet enough high-quality, large-scale human research to conclusively establish Panax notoginseng’s efficacy for the prevention of blood clots. The majority of evidence comes from preclinical studies or from traditional use. Safety profiles are generally favorable, but interactions with other anticoagulant medications should be considered. In summary, while scientific support exists and is growing, the strength of evidence remains moderate (rated 3/5).
