Drug delivery systems are scientifically validated tools used to support the prevention and treatment of blood clots (thrombosis). These systems, such as controlled-release formulations, nanoparticles, liposomes, and injectable hydrogels, are engineered to optimize the delivery of anticoagulant or antithrombotic agents like heparin, warfarin, or direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs). The primary rationale is to enhance the therapeutic efficacy, bioavailability, and safety profile of these medications while minimizing side effects such as bleeding.

Numerous preclinical and clinical studies have demonstrated the benefits of advanced delivery systems in the management of thrombotic disorders. For example, encapsulation of heparin in nanoparticles allows for sustained release, reduced dosing frequency, and targeted delivery to affected blood vessels, which can significantly lower the risk of systemic bleeding. Similarly, oral anticoagulants formulated with novel delivery mechanisms show improved patient adherence and more stable anticoagulation effects.

These delivery approaches are not considered treatments themselves, but rather vehicles to improve the use of established antithrombotic medications. Their use is strongly supported by scientific literature, including randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses, which have shown improved pharmacokinetics and clinical outcomes in patients at risk for blood clots.
