Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3
The Asoka tree (Saraca asoca) has a long-standing place in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, particularly for managing internal bleeding and various gynecological disorders, such as menorrhagia (excessive menstrual bleeding). The bark of the tree is the main part used for these purposes; it is believed to have hemostatic (bleeding-stopping), astringent, and uterine tonic properties. Classical Ayurvedic texts such as the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita mention preparations of Asoka bark for menstrual disorders and uterine bleeding. Modern scientific studies are limited, but some preliminary research has indicated that Asoka bark contains phytochemicals like flavonoids, tannins, and glycosides, which may contribute to its astringent and hemostatic effects. A handful of animal studies and a few small clinical trials have suggested possible efficacy in reducing uterine bleeding and supporting menstrual health. However, these studies are generally of low methodological quality and are not sufficient to meet modern standards for scientific validation. Therefore, the primary justification for using Asoka tree for internal bleeding is traditional, with moderate historical evidence and only preliminary scientific support.
