Evidence supporting the use of: Achyranthes
For the health condition: Bleeding (internal)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Achyranthes, particularly Achyranthes bidentata and Achyranthes aspera, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, especially in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), for managing internal bleeding and disorders related to blood. In TCM, Achyranthes bidentata is often used as a component in herbal formulas intended to "invigorate blood," "dispel stasis," and "stop bleeding," though its primary uses are more often linked to musculoskeletal disorders and gynecological conditions. In Ayurveda, Achyranthes aspera is described as having hemostatic properties and has been used for conditions like hematuria (blood in urine) and excessive menstrual bleeding.
Despite these traditional applications, the scientific evidence supporting Achyranthes for internal bleeding is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies have indicated potential for Achyranthes extracts to influence coagulation or exhibit anti-inflammatory effects, which may theoretically support its traditional use. However, robust clinical trials or substantial pharmacological studies specifically validating its efficacy for internal bleeding are lacking. Thus, the evidence is primarily traditional, with a low to moderate rating due to absence of strong scientific substantiation.
