Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Vitex negundo, commonly known as the Chinese chaste tree or Nirgundi, is traditionally used in various systems of medicine, including Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine, for managing external bleeding and wound care. Historical texts such as the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita mention the application of Vitex negundo leaves and extracts as poultices or topical preparations to stop bleeding, promote wound healing, and reduce inflammation. The leaves are believed to possess astringent properties, which can help constrict blood vessels and thereby reduce bleeding when applied externally.

However, modern scientific validation for this specific use is limited. Some preclinical studies indicate that Vitex negundo has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties, which may indirectly support wound healing, but direct evidence for hemostatic (bleeding-stopping) activity is sparse and generally limited to traditional claims or very preliminary animal studies. As such, its use for external bleeding remains primarily supported by traditional knowledge rather than robust clinical or pharmacological data.
