Evidence supporting the use of: Tulbaghia
For the health condition: Bladder Infection
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Tulbaghia, commonly known as wild garlic or society garlic, has been used in traditional medicine in Southern Africa for a variety of ailments, including urinary tract and bladder infections. Ethnobotanical surveys and traditional healers have reported the use of Tulbaghia species, particularly Tulbaghia violacea, for treating urinary tract issues, including bladder infections. The rationale for its use is based mainly on its perceived antimicrobial properties, as some laboratory studies have demonstrated that extracts of Tulbaghia possess moderate antibacterial activity against certain pathogens. However, these studies are mostly preliminary, in vitro, and not specific to the pathogens most commonly responsible for bladder infections (such as Escherichia coli). There are no robust clinical trials or strong pharmacological evidence directly supporting its efficacy for treating human bladder infections. The evidence, therefore, is rooted primarily in traditional use, with some supporting but limited laboratory data. As such, its use for bladder infections is justified by tradition and supported by weak scientific evidence, meriting a low to moderate evidence rating.
