Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa) has a long-standing history in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for supporting urinary health, particularly in cases of bladder infections and edema. In Ayurveda, it is classified as a "mutrala" (diuretic), which means it is believed to promote urine flow and help eliminate excess fluids and toxins from the urinary tract. Its traditional use for bladder infections and urinary tract complaints is based on its reputed anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and diuretic properties.

Several preclinical (animal and in vitro) studies suggest that Punarnava extracts may possess antimicrobial activity against certain bacteria implicated in urinary tract infections, as well as mild anti-inflammatory effects. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and the direct evidence for its efficacy in treating bladder infections is limited. Most of the existing evidence comes from small-scale studies, traditional texts, and anecdotal reports rather than large, controlled clinical trials.

Therefore, the use of Punarnava for bladder infections is primarily justified by traditional use and limited preliminary scientific investigation. It is widely included in traditional herbal formulations for urinary support in Ayurveda, but its efficacy and safety for this specific indication have not been conclusively established in modern clinical research. Consultation with a healthcare provider is recommended before using Punarnava for urinary tract or bladder issues.
