Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Premna species, particularly Premna serratifolia, have been traditionally used in various systems of traditional medicine, such as Ayurveda and folk medicine in Southeast Asia and India, for a range of ailments, including urinary tract disorders. In these practices, decoctions or extracts from the leaves, roots, or bark are sometimes prescribed to treat symptoms associated with bladder infection (urinary tract infection/UTI), such as dysuria or frequent urination. The traditional rationale often attributes anti-inflammatory, diuretic, or antimicrobial properties to the plant, although specific historical texts may be vague about its precise indications.

From a scientific perspective, there is some preliminary in vitro evidence that certain Premna extracts possess antimicrobial activity against bacteria, including some urinary pathogens. However, these studies are limited in scope and do not directly demonstrate clinical efficacy against bladder infections in humans. No large-scale clinical trials or systematic reviews support the use of Premna for treating bladder infections. Thus, while its use is justified by tradition, the scientific evidence is weak and mostly limited to basic research. Further studies would be required to validate its effectiveness and safety for this indication.
