Prebiotic blends are mixtures of non-digestible fibers and compounds (such as inulin, fructooligosaccharides, and galactooligosaccharides) that are intended to stimulate the growth and activity of beneficial gut bacteria. There is emerging scientific interest in the potential link between the gut microbiome and urinary tract health, including the possibility that modulating the gut microbiota could impact the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs), which include bladder infections. Some studies suggest that alterations in the gut microbiome can influence the composition of the urogenital microbiome, potentially affecting susceptibility to bladder infections. Additionally, it is hypothesized that prebiotics may support the growth of beneficial bacteria that outcompete or inhibit uropathogenic organisms. However, while there is a plausible biological rationale and a handful of early studies (mostly in animal models or small human cohorts) exploring prebiotics’ indirect role in urinary tract health, the direct evidence for prebiotic blends as an effective intervention for treating or preventing bladder infections in humans remains limited. Most clinical guidelines for bladder infection management do not include prebiotics as a recommended therapy. Therefore, while the use of prebiotics is not based on traditional medicine, there is a small but growing scientific basis for their potential utility, though the current strength of evidence is low. More high-quality human trials are needed before prebiotics can be confidently recommended for this purpose.
