Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis) has been used in traditional herbal medicine for centuries, particularly in Europe and the Middle East, to soothe mucous membranes and treat a variety of irritations, including those of the urinary tract. In the context of bladder infection (cystitis), marshmallow root is believed to exert demulcent effects—coating and soothing the lining of the bladder and urethra, which may help alleviate symptoms such as burning and irritation. Historical texts and traditional herbalists have recommended marshmallow root as a supportive remedy for urinary tract complaints, often in combination with other herbs.

However, direct scientific evidence supporting its efficacy specifically for bladder infections is limited. Some laboratory and animal studies indicate that marshmallow root contains mucilage and flavonoids with anti-inflammatory and mild antimicrobial properties, but these effects have not been robustly tested in human clinical trials for urinary tract infections. Most modern sources cite its traditional use rather than strong clinical validation. As such, while marshmallow root is still used in folk medicine for bladder discomfort, its use is primarily based on historical precedent rather than solid scientific research.
