Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Malva sylvestris (common mallow) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine for various inflammatory and infectious conditions, including bladder infections (cystitis). Traditional European and Mediterranean herbalists have used the leaves and flowers of Malva sylvestris as a soothing (demulcent) and anti-inflammatory remedy for urinary tract discomfort. The mucilage content in the plant is believed to help soothe irritated mucous membranes, including those of the urinary tract, which could explain its historical use for bladder infections.

However, scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of Malva sylvestris specifically for bladder infections is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated mild anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and soothing properties of Malva sylvestris extracts, but these studies are not specific to human bladder infections. No rigorous clinical trials have evaluated its effectiveness for this condition in humans. Thus, its use for bladder infections is justified primarily by tradition, with evidence rated at 2 due to historical usage and some supportive (but indirect) pharmacological data.
