Lactococcus rhamnosus (often referred to as Lactobacillus rhamnosus, as the taxonomy has shifted in recent years) is a probiotic strain that has been studied for its potential role in preventing and supporting the treatment of bladder infections, also known as urinary tract infections (UTIs), particularly in women. The scientific rationale originates from the observation that disruptions in the normal urogenital flora, especially a decrease in beneficial lactobacilli, can predispose individuals to recurrent UTIs. Probiotics such as L. rhamnosus are thought to help restore the natural flora, inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria (such as Escherichia coli), and enhance mucosal immunity.

Clinical evidence, while promising, is moderate. Several randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews have evaluated the efficacy of L. rhamnosus (often in combination with Lactobacillus reuteri or other probiotics) for the prevention of recurrent UTIs. Some studies, such as those published in Clinical Infectious Diseases and the Journal of Urology, suggest that vaginal or oral administration of L. rhamnosus can reduce the recurrence of UTIs, particularly in women with a history of frequent infections. However, results are variable, and the optimal strain, dose, and delivery method remain areas of ongoing research.

Overall, there is scientific support for the use of L. rhamnosus in reducing the risk of recurrent bladder infections, but the evidence is not uniformly strong, and guidelines have not universally endorsed its use. More large-scale, high-quality studies are needed to better define its role in UTI management.
