Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla or Chamaemelum nobile) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, especially in Europe and the Middle East. Traditionally, chamomile has been used for its anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and mild antimicrobial properties, which led to its use in various urinary tract ailments, including bladder infections (cystitis). Folk medicine sometimes recommended chamomile tea for drinking, or chamomile infusions for sitz baths to help soothe discomfort associated with urinary tract infections. However, while there is some in vitro evidence of mild antibacterial activity of chamomile extracts, robust scientific studies in humans demonstrating efficacy for bladder infections are lacking. Clinical trials have not established chamomile as a treatment for urinary tract infections. The use of chamomile for bladder infection is thus primarily justified by traditional use rather than modern scientific validation. Chamomile may help relieve symptoms such as discomfort or urinary spasms, but it should not be relied on as a primary therapy for bladder infections, as untreated infections can lead to serious complications. Always consult a healthcare provider for appropriate diagnosis and treatment of bladder infections.
