Evidence supporting the use of: Bauhinia Variegata
For the health condition: Bladder Infection
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bauhinia variegata, commonly known as mountain ebony or kachnar, has been used in traditional medicine systems, particularly Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine, for the management of urinary tract disorders including bladder infections. In these systems, the bark, flowers, and other parts of the plant are believed to have antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and diuretic properties, which are thought to support urinary tract health and alleviate symptoms of bladder infections. Texts such as the Charaka Samhita mention the use of Bauhinia species for urogenital conditions, though not always specifically for acute bladder infections as defined in modern medicine.
Scientific research on the use of Bauhinia variegata for bladder infections is limited but not entirely absent. Some in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated antimicrobial activity of Bauhinia extracts against various pathogens, including bacteria that can cause urinary tract infections. For example, methanolic extracts of its bark and leaves have shown inhibitory effects against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus in laboratory settings. However, there is a lack of robust clinical trials in humans directly evaluating its effectiveness for treating bladder infections. Thus, while traditional use is strong and some preliminary scientific rationale exists, high-quality clinical evidence is lacking, justifying a modest evidence rating.
