Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Aloe macroclada, a species native to Madagascar, is traditionally used in Malagasy folk medicine for a variety of ailments, including as a remedy for urinary tract and bladder infections. Ethnobotanical surveys and reports from Madagascar indicate that local communities prepare decoctions or infusions of Aloe macroclada leaves for their purported antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, which are believed to help alleviate symptoms of bladder infections. However, while there is documentation of traditional use, there is a lack of rigorous scientific studies specifically investigating the efficacy or safety of Aloe macroclada for treating bladder infections. Most available literature on Aloe species focuses on Aloe vera, which has demonstrated some antimicrobial properties in laboratory settings, but these findings cannot be directly extrapolated to Aloe macroclada. Thus, the support for using Aloe macroclada in bladder infections is primarily traditional, and there is little to no clinical or pharmacological research directly validating its use for this condition. Further scientific studies are needed to assess its potential effectiveness and safety.
