For the body system: Bladder
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Sarsaparilla has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine systems, including those of Central and South America as well as in Western herbalism. Traditionally, it has been used for a variety of conditions, including as a general tonic and for supporting the urinary tract and bladder health. The root contains saponins and other phytochemicals thought to have diuretic properties, which could theoretically promote increased urine flow and "cleansing" of the urinary tract. However, most of the traditional uses for sarsaparilla relating to the bladder are based on folklore and empirical observations rather than controlled scientific studies. There is limited modern research investigating sarsaparilla specifically for bladder or urinary tract health, and any such activity has not been robustly validated in clinical settings. Therefore, while its use for supporting the bladder is justified by tradition, there is only weak to moderate evidence from ethnobotanical sources and no strong support from scientific studies. Its use for the bladder persists in some herbal blends and supplements, but claims should be regarded with caution due to the lack of high-quality research.
