Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Pellitory-of-the-wall (Parietaria officinalis) has a long history of traditional use as a herbal remedy to support urinary health, including the bladder. Historical European herbal texts, such as those by Culpeper and Gerard, describe its use as a diuretic and to "cleanse the kidneys and bladder." It has been traditionally administered as an infusion or decoction to promote urination and ease urinary discomfort, often in cases considered to involve "gravel" or minor urinary tract symptoms. The plant is thought to exert a mild diuretic effect due to its flavonoid and potassium content, which may promote increased urine flow and thus help "flush" the urinary tract.

However, there is little to no robust clinical evidence to validate these uses. Modern pharmacological research on Parietaria officinalis is sparse, and there are no high-quality randomized controlled trials confirming its efficacy for bladder health in humans. Most available scientific literature focuses on its allergenic pollen rather than medicinal properties. As such, the recommendation of Pellitory-of-the-wall for bladder support remains rooted in tradition rather than scientific validation. Safety data are also limited, and it should not be considered a substitute for evidence-based medical treatment for urinary tract disorders.
