Lovage (Levisticum officinale) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe. Historically, the roots and leaves of lovage have been used as a diuretic, which means they are believed to increase urine output and thus support bladder and kidney function. This traditional use is found in various herbal compendiums and folk medicine sources, where lovage was often included in remedies intended for urinary tract health, including relief from urinary retention, kidney stones, and bladder discomfort.

The plant contains volatile oils, coumarins, and flavonoids, which have been suggested as the active constituents responsible for its diuretic effects. However, modern clinical evidence supporting these effects is limited. Some laboratory and animal studies suggest mild diuretic action, but there are no robust, high-quality clinical trials validating lovage's efficacy for bladder health in humans.

Regulatory bodies such as the German Commission E have approved lovage root for use in supportive treatment of urinary tract infections and for prevention of kidney gravel, based primarily on traditional use rather than strong scientific evidence. As such, its use to support the bladder system remains rooted in traditional practice, with only limited scientific investigation and validation to date.
