Goldthread (Coptis chinensis), also known as Chinese goldthread or Huang Lian, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In TCM, Goldthread is primarily valued for its "heat-clearing" and "detoxifying" properties, and it is frequently used to address infections, inflammation, and conditions thought to involve "damp heat" in the body. With regard to the bladder, Goldthread has traditionally been included in formulas used to treat urinary tract infections, cystitis, or similar complaints, where symptoms are attributed to "damp heat" in the lower burner (which includes the bladder region). The active compound, berberine, is believed to contribute to its antibacterial effects.

However, while there is some modern research supporting the broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity of berberine and Goldthread extracts, direct evidence from clinical trials specifically validating its use for bladder health or urinary tract infections in humans is limited. Most available studies are either in vitro (test tube) or animal studies. Therefore, current use for bladder support is mainly justified by traditional practices, with emerging but not conclusive scientific interest.

In summary, Goldthread is used to support the bladder system primarily based on traditional use in TCM, with a modest evidence rating due to the lack of robust, direct clinical evidence for this specific application.
