Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Dianthus (commonly known as "Chinese pink" or "Qu Mai" in Traditional Chinese Medicine) has a long history of use to support the urinary and bladder systems. In TCM, Dianthus is traditionally used as a diuretic and to promote urination, often prescribed for issues like painful urination, urinary tract infections, or difficulty urinating. Its use is often in combination with other herbs in formulas designed to "clear heat" and "drain dampness" from the lower burner (the area associated with the kidneys and bladder in TCM theory).

Despite its historical and traditional application, there is limited scientific research on Dianthus and its efficacy for bladder or urinary health. Some phytochemical studies have identified saponins, flavonoids, and other compounds within Dianthus species that could have mild diuretic or anti-inflammatory properties, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Therefore, its use for supporting the bladder is justified by a strong tradition in herbal medicine, especially within the context of Chinese herbal formulas, but modern clinical evidence is currently insufficient to fully validate its efficacy or safety for this purpose.
