Coix (Coix lacryma-jobi), also known as Job's tears, is an ingredient with a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In TCM, coix seed—called "yi yi ren"—is often included in herbal formulations designed to promote urination, drain dampness, and support the function of the urinary bladder. Historically, it has been prescribed for conditions characterized by water retention, urinary difficulty, and to “clear heat” from the bladder. While its use for supporting the bladder system is rooted in traditional practice, there is limited modern scientific evidence directly validating these specific claims. Some pharmacological studies suggest coix may have mild diuretic effects and anti-inflammatory properties, but robust clinical trials substantiating its efficacy for bladder health in humans are lacking. Thus, its use for the bladder is primarily justified by tradition, with some preliminary but not definitive scientific support.
