Chinese Mallow (Malva verticillata), also known as Dong Kui Zi (冬葵子) in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use in supporting urinary and bladder health. In TCM, the seeds and sometimes the aerial parts are used primarily to promote urination, relieve difficult or painful urination (dysuria), and clear heat from the urinary tract. The herb is often included in formulas for urinary tract discomfort, edema, or conditions thought to involve “damp-heat” in the bladder. The traditional rationale is based on Chinese Mallow’s perceived cooling and moistening properties, as well as its ability to “unblock” the water pathways in the body.

From a scientific perspective, there is limited direct research on Chinese Mallow’s effects on bladder health in humans. Some laboratory studies indicate that Malva species possess mild anti-inflammatory and diuretic activities, which could theoretically contribute to their traditional use. However, the available data are insufficient to claim scientific validation for its effects on the bladder. As such, the use of Chinese Mallow to support bladder health is justified primarily by tradition, with a moderate level of anecdotal and historical evidence but little scientific confirmation.
