Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Boldo (Peumus boldus) is traditionally used in South American herbal medicine, mainly for digestive and liver support, but also sometimes for urinary tract and bladder health. The leaves contain alkaloids (notably boldine), essential oils, and flavonoids. Folk medicine practices in Chile and neighboring countries have used boldo infusions as a mild diuretic and for "cleansing" the urinary tract, which may indirectly support bladder function. However, evidence for these effects comes primarily from ethnobotanical reports and historical herbal texts rather than rigorous clinical studies.

Modern scientific research on boldo focuses mostly on its hepatoprotective (liver-protecting) and choleretic (bile-stimulating) activities. There is limited pharmacological evidence for its use as a diuretic, and almost no direct studies examining its effects on bladder health or urinary tract conditions in humans. The diuretic action observed in animal studies is mild and non-specific. Thus, while its use for the bladder is supported by tradition in some cultures, scientific validation is lacking. The overall evidence for boldo specifically supporting the bladder body system is weak.
