Rating (out of 5): 3

Achyranthes, particularly Achyranthes aspera and Achyranthes bidentata, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and folk medicine across Asia and Africa. In TCM, Achyranthes bidentata (Niu Xi) is commonly used to promote urination, alleviate water retention, and support the function of the urinary system, which includes the bladder. It is believed to have diuretic properties and is often used in herbal formulas to treat conditions such as dysuria (painful urination), edema, and urinary tract discomfort. Similarly, in Ayurveda, Achyranthes aspera is regarded as a diuretic and is used for urinary issues and to support kidney and bladder health.

Scientific research supporting these traditional uses is limited but some preliminary studies have indicated that Achyranthes extracts may possess diuretic activity, supporting urine flow in animal models. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and most of the available information is derived from traditional practices and in vitro or animal studies rather than high-quality human research. Therefore, while traditional evidence is strong, scientific validation remains incomplete.
