Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ursane-type triterpenoids, such as ursolic acid, are naturally occurring compounds found in various medicinal plants. Their use in supporting or treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) has some basis in scientific studies, though evidence remains preliminary and mostly preclinical. Laboratory and animal research has shown that ursane-type triterpenoids possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-proliferative effects, which could theoretically ameliorate symptoms of BPH. For example, some studies have demonstrated that ursolic acid can inhibit the proliferation of prostate cells and modulate pathways involved in androgen metabolism and inflammation, both of which play a role in BPH pathogenesis. However, there are only limited clinical studies directly evaluating the efficacy of ursane-type triterpenoids in men with BPH. Most available evidence comes from cell cultures or rodent models rather than human trials. Thus, while there is a plausible scientific rationale and some preclinical data supporting their potential benefit, robust clinical evidence is lacking. The ingredient is not a standard or widely accepted therapy for BPH in clinical guidelines, and more rigorous research is required before recommending it as a treatment for this condition.
