Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Pumpkin seed oil has been traditionally used for urinary health, and in recent years, several scientific studies have explored its potential benefits for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). The active components in pumpkin seed oil, such as phytosterols, delta-7-sterols, and essential fatty acids, are thought to exert anti-androgenic effects, which may help reduce the symptoms of BPH by inhibiting the action of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) on prostate tissue.

Clinical evidence, while limited, does exist. Several small randomized controlled trials and observational studies have reported modest improvements in symptoms like nocturia, urinary flow, and frequency in men with BPH who supplemented with pumpkin seed oil, either alone or in combination with other phytotherapeutic agents. For example, a double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in Urologia Internationalis (2009) found that pumpkin seed oil led to a significant reduction in International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) in men with BPH compared to placebo. However, these studies often have small sample sizes, short durations, and variable formulations, which limits the strength of the evidence.

Overall, current scientific validation for the use of pumpkin seed oil in BPH is modest (rated 2/5). While there is a plausible mechanism and some positive clinical findings, more rigorous, large-scale trials are needed to confirm efficacy and establish standardized dosing.
