Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Spearmint (Mentha spicata) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly as a remedy for various digestive complaints, including belching (eructation). Historically, spearmint has been used as a carminative, meaning it is believed to help relieve flatulence and discomfort associated with excess gas in the digestive tract. This traditional use is documented in herbal texts and folk medicine, where spearmint tea or extracts are commonly recommended to soothe the stomach, reduce bloating, and ease belching.

However, scientific evidence specifically validating spearmint’s effectiveness for treating or reducing belching is limited. Most modern research has focused on peppermint (Mentha piperita), which has a similar but not identical phytochemical profile. A few small studies and reviews have noted that spearmint may have mild antispasmodic effects on the gastrointestinal tract, which could theoretically ease symptoms like belching, but direct clinical trials are lacking. Thus, while the traditional use is well established, scientific validation remains weak, and more rigorous studies would be necessary to substantiate spearmint’s efficacy for this particular condition.
