Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Simethicone is an anti-foaming agent widely used to relieve symptoms of excessive gas in the gastrointestinal tract, such as bloating, discomfort, and flatulence. Its mechanism involves reducing the surface tension of gas bubbles, causing them to coalesce and be more easily expelled. While simethicone is commonly included in over-the-counter remedies for gas-related symptoms, the evidence supporting its effectiveness specifically for belching (eructation) is limited and mixed. Some clinical trials and reviews indicate that simethicone may help reduce the sensation of bloating and the frequency of belching in certain populations, such as those with functional dyspepsia or postprandial distress syndrome. However, systematic reviews and meta-analyses often conclude that the benefit is modest, and studies are frequently small or methodologically limited. Major guidelines acknowledge simethicone as a generally safe option, but do not strongly endorse its use solely for belching due to insufficient high-quality evidence. Thus, while there is some scientific validation for using simethicone to address belching associated with gas, the overall strength of evidence is low to moderate, justifying a rating of 2 out of 5.
