Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Peppermint essence has been traditionally used to address a variety of digestive complaints, including belching (eructation). Historical and folk medicine systems, particularly in Europe and the Middle East, have recommended peppermint oil or extracts for symptoms such as indigestion, flatulence, and associated belching. The rationale stems from peppermint’s antispasmodic effects on the gastrointestinal tract, believed to relax smooth muscle and thereby ease the passage of gas, which could potentially reduce belching. However, while there is moderate scientific evidence supporting the use of peppermint oil for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and general dyspepsia, specific clinical trials directly investigating peppermint essence (or oil) for the treatment of belching are lacking. Some small studies and reviews have noted improvements in overall upper gastrointestinal symptoms, which may include belching, but this is generally not the primary endpoint. Most evidence remains anecdotal or extrapolated from broader studies on digestive health. Therefore, while traditional use is well documented, the scientific evidence directly supporting peppermint essence for belching is limited, justifying a modest rating of 2.
