Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans) and its aril, mace, have a longstanding history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and Unani medicine, for a variety of digestive complaints, including belching, flatulence, and indigestion. The rationale for their use is primarily based on their carminative properties—that is, their ability to relieve gas from the digestive tract. Traditional texts describe nutmeg and mace as warming, aromatic spices that stimulate digestive fire (agni), reduce bloating, and ease discomfort associated with excess gas, which can manifest as belching.

However, there is little to no direct scientific evidence from clinical trials to specifically support the efficacy of nutmeg or mace in treating or reducing belching. Phytochemical studies show that these spices contain volatile oils and compounds such as myristicin and elemicin, which may have some effect on gastrointestinal motility and function, but these effects have not been robustly studied in relation to belching in humans. Thus, while their use is well-established in traditional medicine, scientific validation is minimal, and evidence quality is low.
