Evidence supporting the use of: Fumaria parviflora
For the health condition: Belching
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Fumaria parviflora, commonly known as fine-leaved fumitory or "shahterah" in traditional Unani and Ayurvedic medicine, has historically been used to manage various digestive complaints, including belching (eructation), indigestion, and dyspepsia. The plant is believed to have "carminative" (gas-relieving) and mild cholagogue (bile-stimulating) effects, which are thought to help relieve symptoms of gas accumulation and associated belching. Texts such as the "Unani Pharmacopoeia" and "Ayurvedic Materia Medica" describe its use for clearing excess bile and improving digestion, which could theoretically reduce belching.
However, direct scientific studies evaluating Fumaria parviflora specifically for belching are lacking. Some pharmacological studies have shown mild antispasmodic and hepatoprotective activities, which could secondarily benefit digestive processes. The plant contains alkaloids such as protopine and fumariline, which may influence smooth muscle function in the gastrointestinal tract. Nevertheless, the evidence is primarily based on traditional usage, historical texts, and anecdotal reports rather than rigorous clinical trials. As such, while the use of Fumaria parviflora for belching is well-established in traditional medicine, robust scientific validation is limited, and the evidence rating is moderate at best.
