Chinese Amomum (Amomum villosum), also known as Sha Ren (砂仁), is widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to address digestive issues, including belching. According to TCM principles, Chinese Amomum is believed to promote the movement of qi (vital energy) within the middle burner (the stomach and spleen) and resolve dampness. It is commonly prescribed in formulas to relieve symptoms such as bloating, a feeling of fullness, nausea, and belching, which are interpreted as manifestations of stagnated or rebellious qi in the stomach. Numerous classical TCM texts, including the Compendium of Materia Medica (Bencao Gangmu), describe its use for these purposes. However, while there is some preliminary scientific interest in the potential digestive benefits of Amomum species (such as mild carminative and motility-promoting effects in vitro or in animal models), robust clinical trials specifically supporting its efficacy for belching in humans are lacking. Thus, its use for belching is primarily justified by traditional medical practice rather than strong scientific validation.
