Evidence supporting the use of: Calamus
For the health condition: Belching
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Calamus (Acorus calamus), also known as sweet flag, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for various digestive complaints, including belching (also referred to as eructation). In Ayurveda, calamus is believed to possess "deepana" (appetizer) and "pachana" (digestive) properties, and is commonly prescribed to alleviate symptoms of indigestion, bloating, and gas. Likewise, in TCM, calamus is thought to harmonize the stomach and reduce dampness, addressing symptoms like belching and fullness. The use of calamus for belching is primarily based on these traditional frameworks, which attribute its effectiveness to its aromatic, carminative, and stimulant properties.
However, scientific validation for calamus specifically targeting belching is limited. Some laboratory studies suggest that calamus may have antispasmodic and carminative effects, but these findings are preliminary and mostly in vitro or in animal models. There are no robust clinical trials directly assessing the efficacy of calamus for belching in humans. Safety concerns also exist, as certain calamus preparations (notably those containing β-asarone) have been associated with toxicity. Therefore, while its use for belching is well-rooted in traditional medicine, the overall quality of evidence is low, and its application should be approached with caution.
