Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Black pepper (Piper nigrum) and white pepper (the ripe seed of the same plant with the outer skin removed) have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Unani. In these systems, both types of pepper are often recommended to improve digestion and reduce symptoms like bloating, gas, and belching. The rationale is based on their pungency and presumed ability to "stimulate digestive fire" or promote gastrointestinal motility. However, when it comes to scientific validation, evidence is limited. Some laboratory and animal studies suggest that piperine, the active compound in pepper, may stimulate digestive enzymes and gastric secretions, but human clinical trials specifically examining black or white pepper for belching (eructation) are lacking. Most supportive evidence is anecdotal or based on traditional practice rather than rigorous clinical research. Therefore, while traditional use is established, scientific support is weak, and the overall evidence for pepper’s efficacy in treating or supporting belching is rated as very low.
