Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Amomum species (such as Amomum villosum and Amomum kravanh) are widely used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and other traditional systems for digestive complaints, including belching. In TCM, Amomum (commonly referred to as "Sha Ren") is classified as an aromatic herb that "transforms dampness" and "promotes the movement of Qi," particularly in the spleen and stomach meridians. Classical texts and materia medica describe its use for symptoms such as bloating, fullness, loss of appetite, and belching, which are interpreted as manifestations of disrupted digestive Qi flow. The herb is typically included in multi-herb formulas intended to alleviate stagnation and promote digestive comfort.
However, while animal and in vitro studies have demonstrated some gastroprotective and digestive-promoting properties for extracts of Amomum species, direct clinical evidence in modern biomedical literature specifically supporting its efficacy for belching in humans is lacking or very limited. The traditional use is well established, but scientific validation remains minimal. Therefore, the evidence rating for its use in treating or supporting belching is moderate from a traditional perspective, but weak from a scientific one.
