Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Amomum, a genus of plants in the ginger family (Zingiberaceae), has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The dried ripe fruits, often referred to as "Sha Ren," are commonly used to treat digestive complaints, including belching, bloating, nausea, and loss of appetite. In TCM, Amomum is believed to promote the movement of "Qi" (vital energy) in the stomach and intestines, thereby alleviating symptoms such as belching, which are seen as manifestations of disrupted digestive flow or stagnation.
There are very few clinical studies directly evaluating Amomum's efficacy for belching specifically. However, its traditional use for "rebellious stomach Qi," which encompasses symptoms like belching and nausea, is well documented in classical TCM texts such as the "Shennong Bencao Jing" and "Bencao Gangmu." Modern pharmacological research has identified volatile oils and other constituents in Amomum with potential carminative and antiemetic effects, but direct, high-quality clinical evidence for belching is lacking. Thus, while the traditional rationale is strong and there is some pharmacological plausibility, robust scientific validation remains limited.
