Evidence supporting the use of: Hemp
For the health condition: Bedwetting
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Hemp (Cannabis sativa) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine systems, including Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), for a variety of ailments. In TCM, hemp seeds (known as "huo ma ren") have been used primarily as a mild laxative and to promote bowel health, but there are also references to their use in treating conditions such as bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis), particularly in children. The rationale in traditional contexts often relates to hemp’s supposed ability to "moisten dryness" and "nourish yin," which are concepts unique to TCM and do not have direct analogs in biomedical science.
However, there is a lack of robust scientific evidence to support the use of hemp (in any form) for the treatment of bedwetting. No well-conducted clinical trials or pharmacological studies have substantiated its efficacy for this specific condition. Modern medical literature does not recognize hemp or its derivatives as effective therapy for nocturnal enuresis. Therefore, while its use is justified by tradition, especially in some Asian herbal practices, there is little to no scientific validation for this application.
