For the health condition: Bedwetting
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Cnidium monnieri (commonly known as She Chuang Zi) is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb. Its seeds have been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for centuries, primarily to treat various urinary and reproductive disorders, including bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis). Classical Chinese medical texts describe Cnidium as having properties that "warm the kidney" and "secure the essence," which aligns with TCM's theoretical cause of bedwetting—"kidney deficiency" or "insecurity of the essence." Bedwetting formulas in TCM often include Cnidium along with other herbs for this purpose.
However, scientific evidence supporting Cnidium's efficacy for bedwetting is minimal. There are few, if any, clinical trials or modern pharmacological studies specifically evaluating Cnidium's effects on nocturnal enuresis. Most available modern research focuses on its potential uses for skin conditions, sexual health, and bone health. Therefore, its use for bedwetting is primarily justified by traditional usage patterns rather than by scientific validation. The evidence rating is moderate for traditional use (2/5), reflecting a long history of use but a lack of robust clinical data.
