Evidence supporting the use of: Angelica
For the health condition: Bedwetting
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Angelica (referring primarily to Angelica archangelica or related species) has a history of traditional use in various herbal medicine systems, but its employment for treating bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis) is relatively obscure and not widely documented in authoritative medical or ethnobotanical sources. In some traditional European and Asian herbal practices, Angelica has been used for a range of genitourinary issues, including urinary retention and general urinary tract health. Occasionally, older herbal texts and folk remedies have suggested Angelica for children with weak bladders or for nocturnal urination problems, but these references are sparse and not consistently recognized across cultures.
There is minimal to no scientific research directly investigating Angelica’s efficacy for bedwetting. Modern clinical trials or pharmacological studies supporting its use for this indication are lacking. The rationale in traditional use may stem from Angelica’s mild diuretic and antispasmodic properties, but these effects would not clearly address the underlying causes of nocturnal enuresis and could potentially worsen symptoms in some cases. Overall, the historical evidence is weak, fragmented, and not supported by contemporary science.
