Evidence supporting the use of: Horn
For the health condition: Backache
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Horn, such as powdered animal horn (commonly from deer, goat, or other mammals), has a long tradition of use in various traditional medicine systems, notably Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and some other folk medicine practices. In TCM, certain types of horn—like deer antler (commonly referred to as "Lu Rong")—are considered to possess properties that "tonify the kidney" and "strengthen bones and muscles." Backache is often associated with "kidney deficiency" in TCM theory, and thus horn-derived preparations are sometimes prescribed with the aim of improving vitality and alleviating musculoskeletal discomfort, including back pain. However, scientific evidence substantiating the effectiveness of horn products for backache is minimal to nonexistent. No robust clinical trials or systematic reviews support their use for this indication. The rating of 1 reflects the presence of longstanding traditional use, but with little to no reliable scientific validation. Most available literature discusses either animal studies with limited applicability or anecdotal reports. Furthermore, the use of animal horn raises ethical and conservation concerns, especially for endangered species. In summary, horn has a place in tradition-bound practices for backache, but lacks strong evidence from modern biomedical research.
