Evidence supporting the use of: Ghee
For the health condition: Backache
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Ghee, or clarified butter, is traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine for a variety of health conditions, including backache. In Ayurveda, ghee is considered to have nourishing and lubricating properties, which are thought to support joint health and reduce inflammation. Ghee is often included in the preparation of herbal formulations or used as a carrier (anupan) to help deliver medicinal herbs more effectively into the body. In the context of backache, ghee may be used both topically (as part of therapeutic massages like Kati Basti) and internally (as part of dietary recommendations or medicated ghee preparations). However, the evidence supporting its efficacy is largely anecdotal and based on traditional practices rather than modern clinical trials. There is a lack of robust scientific studies specifically investigating ghee’s effectiveness in treating backache. While ghee does contain healthy fats and small amounts of fat-soluble vitamins, there is no direct scientific evidence to confirm its benefit for back pain relief. Thus, its use for backache is justified by tradition rather than by current scientific validation.
